Registration Information - 5K Pet Walk

Pet Walk is a great way to get involved with AIDS Walk Long Beach and have fun with your other family member.  Of course, Pet Walk is not limited to just four-legged pets.  Walkers have sponsored birds, turtles, cats, and lizards just to name a few.

Long Beach was the first AIDS Walk in the country to have a Pet Walk.  Since then, many AIDS Walks across the country have added this fun component to the walk.  We even advised Louisville, Kentucky AIDS Walk on adding a PetWalk last year. Your pets can enjoy the outdoors, you have fun while raising funds for a worthwhile cause and we give away fun pet gifts from our partners.

1. How do you register for Pet Walk?
Register as a Pet Walker on-line and begin your fundraising just as you would if you were registering as a Walker or Runner.  Complete the form, start your fundraising and bring your form on the day of the Walk.  Check-In at the Pet Registration Booth and get your Official Registration Bag of Goodies.

2. Ensure that all your pets vaccinations are up to date.
Pets must be kept on leashes at all times.  Some even bring wagons or carts for their pets to ride in.  We encourage you to be creative as you want.  Our Walkers have just as much fun and enjoy looking at your pets as they do having fun with the Walk itself. Some owners dress-up their pets in wild costumes or decorate their pet wagons or carriers. There will be plenty of water stations along the way for your pets, too.  You're sure to get a lot of pictures taken by the participants!

3. Start collecting sponsorship pledges for your Pet.

Pick up a form at many locations throughout Long Beach and the South Bay, or download the form or even call our office at (562) 987-5200 for the Walk Sponsorship Pledge Form.  Don't forget to set a goal for yourself and use our on-line fundraising tips to help you raise money.

4. Do your fundraising on-line or off-line.

Fundraising can be done easiest on-line with our easy and secure on-line donation process.  On-line donations actually keeps our costs of fundraising down. You can create your own webpage easily, write a little bio about your efforts, upload a picture of you and your pet, send out e-mails to friends and family. Tough you can still use the Walk Sponsorship Pledge Form, those who used the on-line fundraising process last year raised 63% more using the easy on-line functions.

5. Start fundraising and having fun!
Who can say NO to a picture of a pet?  When you add that with a terrific cause like AIDS Walk Long Beach, and all your friends and family will want to help out.  Plus, the top three Pets raising the most funds will be awarded their First Place, Second Place and Third Place Awards and Prizes on Walk Day.

6. Preparing your Pet for the PetWalk.

If your pet is not use to walking more than 3 miles, we strongly encourage you bring a wagon, stroller or carriage for your pet. Be sure to also have to have a water bowl to keep your pet sufficiently hydrated.  We will have Waterstations along  the route will pet water bowls available. New for 2009, we will have Pet Safety Monitors along the route for your assistance.

Also, be prepared for possible hot weather.  Although the Walk is along the bike path and finishes up along the shaded public sidewalks along Ocean Blvd, we want to remind you that the street portion of the walk can be hot to the footpads of your pet. We are starting the Walk earlier this year in the event the weather is hot.
